Day 2 in Modern History has us begin to THINK like a Historian.

Please complete the directions for the Exeter Family History assignment:

Historian as Detective

In many cases when trying to figure out how a culture lived, a historian must act like a detective.  Just as a detective looks for clues to solve a case, a historian looks for clues to explain what was happening politically, economically, culturally, religiously, and
technologically in a particular society.  These clues often are artifacts, letters, primary source documents, or essays from people during in the society during that time period.  This assignment allows the student to play the role of historian by looking at facts, figures and information to discover what was going on during a particular period in history.

Directions
  1. Set up into groups of four.  The four of you will need to have one finished paper by the end of the time period for this assignment.

  1. You have received a copy of a family’s checkbook register.  That is, the portion of the checkbook where the check number, the date, whom the check was payable to, and the amount payable to is listed.

  1. You and your partners are to write a family history for the Exeter family based on the checkbook register.

-use the dates, the “payable to” and the amount of the check as clues as to what events were occurring in the life of the Exeter family.

-through the information provided by the check register, your group should come up with a thorough family history of the Exeter family.

-your group can not mention the checks in the family history.  The history should be in the 3rd person (he, she, they, the Exeter family, or Mr. Exeter, etc.).

-The family history should take into account each check written.  In other words, all of the checks correspond to some event in the life of the family.

-Each group should be imaginative and creative when doing this assignment.  Use your critical thinking skills to develop the events that occurred in the life of the family.

-Be a historian!
